Kira Kira Nail Salon is a series of ongoing performances about identity, taking place across a series of locations and over the course of several years.
A nail salon is set up in a location, where members of the public are offered a free manicure with press-on nails. The person who choose to take part becomes a participant in the performance and is asked to answer one question about their own identity in exchange for the nail set. The conversation is recorded, anonymised, and stored on a chip. The participant then has a set of fake nails applied to their nails, with a chip attached to one of them. The chip contains an audio recording of someone else’s reflection on their own identity. The recording can be accessed by tapping the nail with the chip against the back of a smartphone, at which point the recording pops up on the screen.
All the recordings are stored in an ever-growing database of identity fragments, which are redistributed across nail sets applied during different iterations of the performance, taking place in different countries and over multiple years.
The work addresses identity and reflects on superficiality and depth, truth and concealment, care and vulnerability.
